It can’t have failed to have come to your attention, even without the aid of my stats page, that my photography posts always garner more likes than my written ones. It’s ironic when I’ve pigeon holed myself with the “words with” label on this blog, but I’ve recently taken it as a sign that I should in fact follow my gut instinct and establish a photography blog in addition to this ‘wordier’ one.
Brace yourselves, Nanna’s words and pictures are about to part ways.
Well, sort of. Photography is something I’ve always had a passion and hobby for in addition to my reading and writing, and whilst it will still be rare for me to post without any photos at all on Nanna Prawn I think the time has come for me to divert some focussed attention to showcasing the better examples of my photography and branch out into a dedicated space that’s devoted to taking some positive action in that direction.
People who know me well, and I mean really well, are already aware that I have a very low boredom threshold, an underlying mood disorder, and the attention span of a gnat. Some may say it makes me impossible to work with, irritating, selfish and egotistical, others comment that it’s wonderful that I haven’t lost my child-like enthusiasm for trying new things, exploring and adventuring, and not sitting still too long (I can’t quote any of these ‘others’ of course, because I’m also a narcissist which means that it’s mainly me that says that).
It’s not that I enjoy juggling lots of competing balls in the air, it’s more that I have a need for variety in my life to keep me keen and focussed. I’ve never been able to answer the question “so what do you want to do/be?” because what I really want to be, and to do, is everything, and why not?! I’m not alone in that I’m sure and it comes as no surprise to me that a lot of photographers also love to write and read. We’re focussed and creative types, and always looking ahead to the next frame, so it’s probably not that crazy to try and do both?!
My honours degree will soon be finished and I’ll be devoting a lot more time to writing more seriously with the skills I’ve acquired over the last four years of study and further improving my photography. Nothing earth shattering, nothing that’s going to pay the mortgage off, but enough to make it worthwhile hopefully. Sometimes the two skills may simultaneously and serendipitously collide here on this blog and other times they will be more disciplined and focused by being separated (I sound very sensible all of a sudden, but don’t worry, it’s bound to pass).
I’m aiming with my photography to link up to a little Etsy shop and try to make some ‘pin’ money from selling downloads and prints, and I’m contemplating being available for hire for informal family events and marketing photography. Nothing too serious or over committed, just the slow and steady work in progress approach but with a long term plan in mind. So I’m aiming low: piece meal work for both writing and photography, but enough of a challenge to raise them just above the hobby level to see where they could lead.
I’ll still be blogging in my usual haphazard fashion here, writing articles and contributing as much as possible to Tipsy Lit which has taken off and become an instant hit – mainly because Ericka Clay is way more talented than she realises. I’ll post about any progress of my new endeavour as it develops, but don’t expect any more weekly photo challenges on Words With Nanna Prawn, they’ll be moving to the photography blog so that you get what you expect on NannaPrawn…..well, almost.
All Eyes On These will be a new and exciting adventure for me:
